Type Locality and Naming

The type section is on the northern slope of Qingpoling south of Village Gangou in Honghua, Sanya City, Hainan Island. In the type area, the Gangoucun Fm is 64.08 m thick (Zeng et al., 1992). The Gangoucun Fm was named by Mu Enzhi et al. in 1977, and was published by Ge Meiyu et al. (1983).

Lithology and Thickness

The formation is dominated by gray sandy shale and siltstone, with a basal pebbly sandstone.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It rests conformably on the Jianling Fm

Upper contact

It is unconformably overlain by the Cretaceous Lumuwan Fm. Regionally, the next younger unit is the Tuolie Fm of early Silurian.

Regional extent

The Gangoucun Fm is exposed in Qingpoling and the axial area of the Simaling syncline, Sanya (Ni Shizhao et al., 1992).

Fossils

This stratigraphic unit yields brachiopods Sowerbyella sp., Hallina sp., Idiospira sp., Leptolliodea yaxianensis and trilobites Encrinuroides sp., Parisoceraurus sp.
